Description
            An eating disorder associated with an abnormal perception of body image. Patients may eat large amounts of food then purge through self-induced vomiting or with the use of laxatives. This disorder may be associated with anorexia nervosa. Patients with this disorder can suffer from depression and other psychiatric problems.           
        Symptoms
            Binge eating, self-induced vomiting, inappropriate use of laxatives and/or diuretics, overachieving behavior.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: blood tests to identify metabolic abnormalities.

Treatment
            Therapy depends on the severity of the disorder. Treatment of any metabolic abnormalities (low sodium, low potassium, dehydration). Psychological treatment may include: behavioral modification techniques, and counseling. Antidepressants are sometimes used.
