Description
The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and eyelids. Conjunctivitis can occur from infection, inflammation or allergies. Infections can result from virus or bacteria although viral causes are more common. Infectious conjunctivitis occurs more commonly in children and can be highly contagious. It is mainly spread through direct contact with infected tears, eye discharge, respiratory droplets, or contaminated objects.

Eye redness, itching, pain, irritation and discharge.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Full ophthalmology exam may be performed to rule out other causes of eye redness.

Treatment
Therapy depends on the cause of the conjunctivitis. Treatment includes: topical allergy or antibiotic medications. If an infectious process is suspected family members must be careful to not come in contact with the discharge from the infected eye to prevent the infection from spreading to others.
