Description
Conditions in which the intervertebral disc is infected or inflamed. The intervertebral discs are the cushioning structures between the bones of the back. Discitis can develop through bacteria in the blood being delivered to the disc space, or from inflammation caused by an autoimmune disorder. Infections can also spread from adjacent infections and occasionally from diagnostic testing or surgery.
Symptoms
Fever, back pain, back stiffness, weakness, numbness, tingling in the extremities.
Tests

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed, X-rays, CT scan and/or MRI may be performed. MRI is the most accurate method of detection. White blood cell count, C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) may be measured and monitored.
Tests:
Complete blood count (CBC), CT Scan, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray
Other Specific Tests: ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate)

Treatment
Antibiotics, especially those to cover staphylococcal infections are administered. If the disease is due to an autoimmune disorder, anti-inflammatory or immune suppressing medications may be provided.
