Description
An inflammation of the sheath that surrounds two tendons that control movement of the thumb. The inflammation causes the sheath around the tendon to swell and enlarge, making thumb and wrist movement painful. Making a fist and grasping objects are commonly painful with de Quervain's tenosynovitis.
Symptoms
Pain over the thumb-side of the wrist is the main symptom, pain may radiate down the thumb or up the forearm, hand and thumb motion increases pain, swelling over the base of the thumb, occasional catching or snapping when moving the thumb.

A history and physical exam will be performed. X-rays may be recommended if there is concern that arthritis or a fracture may be causing the symptoms.

Treatment
Treatment may include splinting, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or injection of the tendon sheath with cortisone. If symptoms persist surgery may be recommended.
