Description

A hernia of the bladder, usually into the vagina and introitus. It may occur from excessive straining or stretching of nearby tissues, such as during childbirth, chronic constipation or heavy lifting. It is more common in older women and those who've given birth to several children.

Symptoms

Fullness in vaginal area, vaginal pain, mass in vaginal area that enlarges with straining, inability to empty bladder completely, frequent urination, frequent urinary infections.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms but may include: a pessary, estrogen replacement, or surgery. For a cystocele that causes mild or no symptoms, no treatment may be necessary.
