Description

An accumulation of blood in front of the colored portion of the eye usually resulting from trauma to the eye. The hyphema may obstruct the flow of aqueous humor and lead to increased pressure within the eye (glaucoma). The increased pressure can cause permanent damage.

Symptoms

Eye pain, redness at the front of the eye, blurry vision, nausea, vomiting.

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. A slit lamp examination and measurement of eye pressure will be done.

Treatment

No treatment may be needed, but it depends on the severity of the injury. Treatment may include: eye patching, eye drops to reduce inflammation and/or eye pressure, drainage of the blood from the eye, and/or surgery.
