Description
An abnormal presence of bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi in the body causing disease. The most common sites of infection are the urine, blood, skin, lung or throat.
Symptoms
Depends on the part of the body infected. Common symptoms include fever, pain, swelling, and fatigue.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Lab tests and imaging studies (X-ray, CT scan, MRI) may be recommended to determine the extent of damage done by the infection. Blood and urine tests and swabs to identify evidence of an infectious organism may be recommended.

Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), CT Scan, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Urinalysis (UA), Ultrasound, X-ray

Treatment
Treatment depends on the organism causing the infection. Treatment may include administration of an anti-microbial medication. For some infections, such as the virus that causes the common cold, there are not effective anti-microbial medications available.
