Description

Occurs when the outermost joint of the finger is injured. The injury occurs when the tendon on the back side (dorsal) of the finger detaches from the bone. It can be associated with a fracture. The patient is unable to extend the end of the finger. It is a common sports injury.

Symptoms

Pain, swelling, tenderness of the finger, inability to extend the tip of the finger.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. An X-ray is done to identify an associated fracture.
