Description
Papillae are tiny bumps of tissue on your tongue. Many of them contain tastebuds. Sometimes they can become painful. Trauma, such as biting your tongue or eating something hot or very spicy, and cigarette or cigar smoking are the most common causes of painful papillae of the tongue. A painful tongue also can be a symptom of other health conditions, such as vitamin deficiency or infections.

Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause of the pain. The condition improves when the trauma heals or the underlying condition is treated. Treatment may include smoothing sharp teeth, quitting a smoking or tongue-biting habit, or using mouth rinses to relieve pain. Good oral hygiene, including tongue brushing, may help. In most cases, the outlook is excellent.
