Description
Nearsightedness is the difficulty seeing distant objects. It can be an inherited disorder and is caused by an eye that is too long from front to back. The eye focuses the object in front of the retina which results in blurred vision. Nearsightedness is a very common visual problem.

Symptoms include difficulty seeing objects that are distant, headaches, squinting and poor school performance in children.

Treatment
Treatment usually consists of prescribing glasses or contacts to correct the vision problems. Some cases can be corrected by laser surgery (LASIK), photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) and radial keratotomy (RK). All of these procedures reshape the cornea and allow the eye to focus better.
