Description
Thinning and inflammation of the vaginal walls. The disorder occurs around or after menopause and is caused by declining levels of estrogen. Any other disorder that corresponds with lower levels of estrogen can also lead to the disorder including surgical removal of the ovaries, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy for breast cancer.
Symptoms
Vaginal dryness, vaginal burning, painful intercourse, increased risk of urinary tract infections.

A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests may be done to establish the diagnosis.

Liberal use of vaginal lubricants. Consider estrogen cream or low dose estrogen pills or patches.
