Description

Toe swelling can result from inflammation, infection, allergic reaction or very rarely cancer. Inflammation can be caused by trauma, arthritis, gout, or an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis.

A history and physical exam will be performed. Depending on the history, a toe x-ray and/or blood tests may be done.

Treatment

Depends on the cause of the swelling but may include: immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn or Aleve), pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or antibiotics.
