Description
The bacteria that is responsible for "strep throat" is Streptococcus Group A. It can also cause a crusting red skin infection called impetigo. It generally causes a mild infection, but can enter the blood stream and result in life threatening infections (necrotizing fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome). Untreated or partially treated streptococcal throat infections can cause Scarlet fever or Rheumatic fever. Occasionally kidney failure can occur after a streptococcal throat infection.
Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the area infected but generally include: sore throat, pain with swallowing, fever.

Treatment
Treatment depends on the area infected and the extent of infection. The majority of patients are treated with oral antibiotics such as penicillin or erythromycin. Ibuprofen (Motrin) and/or acetaminophen (Tylenol) is given for fever and pain relief. It is important a patient with a strep throat infection finish all their antibiotic to prevent Rheumatic fever.
