Description

Pressure and compression of the nerves in the lower part of the spinal canal (lumbar region). It is a surgical emergency and if untreated can lead to paralysis of the legs and inability to control the bowel and bladder. Causes include trauma, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, cancer, bleeding, or inflammation.

Symptoms

Leg weakness, leg numbness, loss of bowel or bladder control, back pain.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Imaging studies (CT, MRI, or myelogram) may be performed to identify the cause of the spinal cord compression.

Tests:
Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), CT Scan, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray

Treatment

Treatment often includes: corticosteroids, radiation therapy (if caused by cancer), and/or surgical decompression.
