An episode of acute depression that is the result of a stressful life event such as: loss of job, loss of a loved one, house fire, or natural catastrophe. It is unclear why some are affected and others are not. The symptoms can last days to years.

The symptoms began after a definable life stress event and include: sadness, despair, helplessness, lack of energy, increased sleeping, decreased sleeping, loss of appetite.
